Pony Control - Getting rid of EPP combo? August 6, 2018 12:20 AM

I have about 1400 mares to breed and not the time (or honestly, desire) to breed them all and feel they’d be useless as broods since at least 500 of those are EPP combos. I cull them very harshly and consistently, but my numbers can’t seem to go down. I was wondering if anyone has completely gotten rid of their EPP combos and what they’re experience has been. Of course, I wasn’t planning to do so in my weaker or smaller breeds, but I’m definitely considering it for my AA, ISH, and SH.

Pros: less to breed, less to name, less to check progeny for culling (mega time saver)

Cons: 1. Although low on EEEs, my EPP combos are the main (70-80%) source of my PEE combos in those breeds, especially over time
2. Sheer numbers help to offset bad RF on key matches (in terms of PEE/EEE count per month)
3. Some EPP combos are stronger than the PEEs.
4. Would increase inbreeding greatly in the long run

I really don’t like the cons, but I’m also running out of options and need the pros. What have some of the larger stables done?

Unfortunately there is no solution for everyone regarding the rating-question.

While there are some players in the game, that even want to cull "weak" EEEs and dont want to see any other ratings in the whole game any more - there is still a big amount of players that love their EPP combos and feel delighted if they manage to produce PEE combos ;)

At the end it is all up to you and the time you want to spend in this game.

More horses = a lot more time spent at HEE
Less horses = less fun, less random luck foals etc

It will not help alot, but you will have to go from your pros and cons and then decide how you want to play...

I released mine a loooong time ago and don't regret it at all. If they consistently produce PEE+ keep them. If not, let them go. I'd say the same thing goes with your PEE combos. If they can't at least produce their own rating, they're no good to your rating program.

I also FR'ed all of my EPP combos a while back. They became unmanageable, and most of them ended up unbred at the end of the year. It left me with very few horses, but also left me with loads of time to do other things, as well as excess money that usually went into riders, feed, and barn space for them. For me it was an excellent solution to most of my problems, and left me more motivated and organized.

However, there is the side to it where you will have less of a chance for PEE combos and the odd EEE out. For me, this wasn't an issue. Im one of those people Kuewi is talking about, who likes to cull weak EEE's and such. So I knew that all of the PEE's coming from those mares were usually crap, and produced nothing more than PEP combos for me for the most part, so it was an easy parting. If sheer numbers are important to you, then you might want to keep them. :)
