Okay. I've had my avatar reset twice in a row now, and the mod/admin isn't responding to my messages, so. Here's the messages: "Your avatar was reset because it was not stock and had no credits." It had credits. They could have been too hard to see, okay. I redid the avatar and made them BOLD and black, to fix this. NOPE Reset today for: "Your avatar was reset because the original image was not stock and can not be used." Here's a quote straight from the DA account I used the photo of (to clarify, my avatar is a cropped photo of a digital painting I made, using one of her photos as a reference):
"you can use my photos ONLY as references for traditional or digital paintings, just put link back for my DA page and send me your result - I would like to look at your work.
- !BUT my photos are forbidden for manipulations or editing in any way!"

Despite her clearly saying her photos are okay as references, is this STILL not considered allowable? I don't mean to sound rude or anything, this whole thing is just so frustrating. I totally get why it was removed originally, I should've made the credits more noticeable. I want to put my avatar back up, but I don't want this happening AGAIN. |

A reference is making something completely different from just looking at the picture, not just cropping the image and uploading the exact picture to another site. That's called stealing even if you put credit.
edit: that was not meant to sound rude in any way, if it did. edit #2: This painting was just so absolutely good that I didn't realize it was a painting for some reason after looking at the picture! :) |

You did not use it as a reference, you did a photo manipulation. That is strictly prohibited by the photographer. It is considered stealing. |

That is actually in the photography section and not stock at all.
You need to be careful that when looking through gallerys, once you find a picture you make sure it is stock and not in photography section. |

It's NOT a manipulation, it's a painting.

Beneath her (nightmare-v's) deviantID, it does indicate her photos can be used as references - therefore this should be OK. Sometimes we need to see WIP's to be sure. ^_^ Sorry for the trouble. Your image should be approved after seeing this. Perhaps credit it: Ref (c) nightmare-v@dA or something along those lines.
But typically, just as a side note, the best way to find stock images on dA is (from the main page) by selecting Resources & Stock Images then searching for what you are looking for. Often times we navigate to an image, see it isn't classified as stock and assume that it is not a stock photo. In this case, it isn't exactly stock but the artist does give permission for it to be used as a ref. |

Thank you! I typically use very well known stock providers, but sometimes I happen to find amazing photographers that DO allow their images to be used. In this case, I use them for personal pieces for myself. I always take photos of the progress to share with people, so I'll be sure to keep those on standby if I have a problem again! |
