Choose A Scene: Moonlit Creek Farms   The Free Range   Medieval Times

Medieval Times
Scene Three: Medieval Times
Roleplay Type: Horses, Riders, and Fantasy Creatures

Step back in time, to a long lost age before the Moonlit Creek Farm we know today. To a time when a strong King reigned with his beautiful Queen in the Castle of Moonlit Creek. A time when knights and champions are needed to defend the peasants and commoners from treasure-hoarding dragons, mountain bandits, and other dangers. This was a time when a man's horse was his life, his friend, his ally.

Rowan narrowed her eyes, her suspicion raised. She was sure this man was a bandit, and at the drop of a hat, she was expecting him to pull a dagger and rob her for all that she was worth. Which wasn't much; she only had a few coins to her name, enough to make it by with the simple life she lived.

"It is. What's your point?" she replied brusquely. Killian pawed at the ground.

Caleb looked at the girl. he should just let her go but town was a way away and it was dangerous to out at night. "towns a way away miss." Caleb hated his morals at times like this

Rowan couldn't see anything at first, only heard the crunching of hooves against leaves. Then a shadowed figure emerged into the moonlight which cast its pale rays on this section of the forest where the overhead trees parted.
Her fingers instinctively twitched, wanting to reach for her bow, but she resisted the urge. For now.
Killian flattened his ears at the other horse, sizing him up. Rowan seemed to do the same, except she was judging the other person, trying to determine if he was friend or foe.
She kept a firm hold on the reins as Killian shifted, lashing his tail.
"No," she replied flatly, making sure not to show a shred of weakness. "I'm headed for town. I know where I'm going."

Caleb and whiskey came into view. "you lost miss?" Caleb asked curious why someone would be that far out of town at this hour. Whiskey tossed his head. His blue roan paint coat shimmering in the moonlight

Rowan was sharply cognizant of the darkening sky, it made her heart buzz and pump an electric fear through her body. For once, she felt like the prey animal, at the mercy of the hunter. This feeling rubbed off on Killian, and he tensed up, tossing his head frequently.
She reached out to pat his neck in an attempt to soothe him, though it was a fruitless task, because she was not at ease herself. And when she tried to will away the fear, when she told herself that town was only a few steps away, she would not be calm. Because she was stubborn, and wouldn't believe a single lie, not even her own.
Rowan shook her head, snapping herself into focus. She shushed these feelings, shoving them down into the pit of her mind, trying to silence them, her attention now dead-set on the path ahead.

Caleb watched as the girl and the horse got closer. It was getting dark. He knew they wouldn't make it back to town before dark. He tacked up whiskey and Rode out to meet them though every fibre of his being told him not to.

Rowan guided the injured horse through the forest astride Killian. The stallion kept his ears pricked, as the trees and undergrowth cast shadows that were impenetrable to the eye, making it easy for anything to sneak up on them.
Every howl of the wind, every rustle of a bush made Rowan glance around, wildly.
Yes, she hunted in these parts frequently, but she had never come across any predators. She wasn't even sure there were any, as she always hunted during the day. Or maybe she'd just gotten lucky every time, though that notion was even more impossible.
Rowan glanced back at the horse, making sure Killian's pace was slow enough for her to keep up. At this speed, it would take longer to reach town. Rowan swung forward and peered up at the sky. She wondered if they wouldn't arrive at their destination until sunrise.
That didn't matter anymore. No matter how long it took, Rowan had tasked herself with getting this horse somewhere safe. And she was going to follow through on it.

Caleb Browne lived alone in a secluded cabin with his horse Whiskeys wish. he loved Whiskey with all his heart had the stallion since he was a colt. Caleb didn't much like going into town but would if he had to, for supplies and stuff for whiskey but mainly he hunted his own food. years ago, Caleb once had a friend, jack. Jack had once helped the wrong person, and Caleb watched his only friend die. ever since he'd been weary of strangers. but once his tough exterior gets broken through and someone has earnt his trust, he's quite the gentleman. Caleb was chopping wood at his cabin when he heard whiskey nicker out to another horse. Caleb saw a figure of a girl through the trees. "just my luck." he grumbled to himself

After a bit becklin came out looking refreshed she yawned and took Jack out of his stable and said “ready to get back on the road?” Jack nodded his head and snorted softly “yes I’m ready to get out of this place” he thought. She got him ready to ride then they were off

Rowan's brows furrowed as the horse limped over, but she assured herself that they weren't far from town. She thought the horse could make it, or at least, hoped she could. Because Rowan didn't like the idea of camping out in the woods.
Rowan approached Killian, who lifted his head and eyed the other horse warily, his ears flicking back. She climbed into the saddle and urged Killian into a slow place, guiding the horse.

rowan just... stood there, stiff like a board as the horse approached and held her head, low and obedient. rowan glanced back at killian, silently pleading for his help, as if he could even understand her predicament. the stallion just kept grazing.

rowan huffed, stuck on what to do. there was no way she could take on another horse, convinced that she didn't have the innate "horse-whisperer" abilities that other people seemed to possess.

not to mention, this horse seemed injured.

her eyes flicked up to the sky. it was orange, and quickly, it would get darker. she couldn't leave the poor thing here. rowan decided that she'd take it to town (because she would be headed there anyway, to stay at the inn) and find someone who could care for the horse.

rowan tried to test if the horse would follow her. she turned around and started walking towards killian, patting her leg like you would to call a dog to you.

Minx walked slowly toward the carrots and sniffed them. Nothing dangerous here. She quickly ate them and looked at the person who had tossed her the carrots. She stepped forward, bowing her head in submission.

a shrill call echoed from the nearby beach. a high-pitched whinny from a horse. rowan's heart sank as the sound alerted the deer, causing it to scurry away into the bushes.

rowan groaned under her breath, eyes darting around to find the source of the noise. her gaze eventually landed on the faint, black shape of a horse in the distance, standing atop a grassy slope.

she lowered her bow and dangled in it one hand, the other gripping the reins. she nudged killian closer. she could see the horse was holding herself stiffly, limping whenever she moved

rowan glanced at her bow. one part of her wanted to put the poor creature of her misery. but she couldn't. she had the heart, or lack thereof, to do many things - but that wasn't one of them.

so she slung her bow across her back.

carefully, she slid out of the saddle and made a slow approach, her own horse watching curiously. rowan dug into one of the leather pouches attached to her belt and pulled out a few sliced carrot parts - she usually fed them as treats to killian.

she tossed them towards the horse.

Minx stuck her leg into the salt water and winced when the salt penetrated her wound. She smelled fresh water so she hobbled toward it and took a long drink.
She climbed up a hill and saw a stallion with a rider. Minx whinnied. She needed help, she knew. She hoped they were kind people.

rowan stalked through the dense forest astride her stallion, killian. her gaze pierced through the undergrowth; rowan's 'ma and 'pa used to say she had eyes like a hawk's - dark, sharp, and searching.

beneath the saddle, killian flexed his neck and let out a deep snort, the muscles beneath his black coat tense. he was restless, bored, yet he knew his job was to follow rowan's direction. that was the tie that bonded the rider and her horse, that quiet eagerness to work.

and rowan certainly had a job to do herself. since there were no restrictions on who could hunt in the kingdom, that was how she made her living - downing animals (mainly deer) and bringing said animal to the butcher in the nearest town in exchange for a few coins.

and it looked as if rowan wouldn't be going into town empty-handed. ahead of her was a lush clearing, and in the center, she could just make out the leaf-shaped tail of a deer. the creature was facing away from her, head down, grazing.

she took this chance to nudge killian closer, using the bushes for cover. this moment was opportune for rowan to try her hand at mounted archery; usually, she just hunted on foot. she pulled her bow and an arrow from her back.

she readied her bow, holding her breath, praying that killian would stay still long enough for her to make the shot.

Minx travelled painfully down the beach leaving hoofprints in the sand. She paused and hid as a dragon flew overhead, then continued hobbling along. She glanced at her leg, which was now swollen. The man who had stolen her, a wild horse, had beaten her badly. She had escaped, and now here she was. She only hoped to find a herd who would care for her - otherwise she would die.

Cinder practically sighed out the words. The guard nodded to cinder and then cinder continued to her bedroom, which was too big for her liking.
