Rough Plot:
Two warring countries. To settle this harsh disagreement, they marry off the princess to the prince. Naturally, these two don't like each other in the slightest. So instead, they start looking for a way to smuggle her away without anyone noticing or snapping the small bond they've started to grow between countries.
.
And so it begins

The fae watched as the people around her bustled about the camp, cleaning up their tents and fires. Less than three hours away by carriage. The other fae around her were extremely cautious, even Taeya. Her Lady in Waiting who was currently brushing the princess's hair, was looking around suspiciously. As if they all expected the worst in these enemy lands. Three days on the road and Freyja was more than ready to simply have it over with and yet she wanted it to be drawn out as long as possible. After all, who wanted to be sent away to marry the enemy. Her only duty her father had said. Bah. "Taeya. I would like to pick some raspberries before we head off." The female spoke. Her voice musical yet stern as she sat straight backed.
.
The other fae nodded quietly ad disappeared to fetch a basket for her lady. Her only sibling risked for escorting her was her brother, Faustian. The third born son to the King and Queen of the Fae. Her dark haired twin. Even now he stood, deep in conversation with an advisor. The next great warlord. Caspian would be king, Daemon a priest, so that left Faust with war and her with marriage. Lovely, isn't it? Not to mention the outrageous age gaps between them. Yes, this was common. Fae were known to have difficulty with children but Freyja had just celebrated her fortieth birthday as Caspian celebrated his four hundreth. Neither looked more than twenty. Faustian caught her eye and gave a curt nod and returned to his important business. At least she wasn't the sore thumb in the family. Her twin took after her mother's father. Dark hair, eyes, and even his skin was a few shades darker than her own. Freyja mirrored her father almost exactly. The same wine colored curls and golden eyes and skin that looked like her coffee after only a bit of cream.
.
"My lady, I have a basket. Shall we go now?" Taeya asked from behind. Freyja stood and nodded, linking their arms with a smile. Of all the fae. Taeya was perhaps the sweetest. Red faced now because of all this sun but her honey colored hair and dark eyes made her look the most innocent. Freyja might have made her a spy if she hadn't grown so attached to the female.
.
"Cook says we must hurry. Almost everything is packed up and ready to go," She smiled. "But she said she'd leave out a bowl of sugar for us on the ride."
.
"How very sweet of her," Freyja replied, kneeling at the nearest bush. She was almost certain her brother chose this spot so that the Berry bushes were only a few feet away in every direction. No need to wander off on your own. Safety first.
.
When their basket was full, the camp had finished decomposing and people were mounting. Taeya told Freyja to go on and she'd get the sugar. So she walked to the carriage and climbed in, setting the basket on the small table, popping a tart Berry in her mouth. No sooner than Taeya returned the whole group started to move. One carriage and about fifteen horses, ten with riders. The sugar was set beside the basket and immediately they started on the treats.
.
"My lady, are you nervous?" Taeya asked, popping one in her mouth. Freyja shook her head and then shrugged.
.
"There's nothing to be nervous about. This sort of thing happens all the time. I just hope they let me eat my sweets," She grinned, tossing a Berry at her friend. Silently hoping this three hour ride would go by quickly. Maybe she'd get lucky and whoever she was sent to would decide she wasn't to their liking and send her off to a country home. Peace and quiet sounded nice.

The castle was alive, guests and stuff flooding the hallways. The delivery of the Fae princess was a big deal, it just meant that they would need more staff than usual. Keenan rolled his eyes as servants hurried past with crates filled with decorations, he’d already had to talk his parents down from having a ball on her first night. Vampire lords poured in from all over the lands. Luckily their blood supply was high, although he knew more collections would be needed once the guests had left. No human would be so foolish as to enter the castle when there were so many vampires milling around.

If he was being honest, he’d forgotten how big the castle truly was. He hadn’t attended a ball in years after his injury. His parents had not deemed him presentable until now, scars fade, it just takes time and the king decided he would spend that time in seclusion with few visitors.

“Keenan,” a voice called, male and belonging to his best friend.

“Montague,” he said relieved.

Monty was one of his few friends, he was more like a brother, and they were closer than he had ever been to his real brother. He was one of the few people that visited him and Keenan knew he still felt responsible for what happened. No one was blamed other than himself, the king made sure he understood that it was his fault for letting his guard down.

Monty was a similar height to him, although that was where the resemblance stopped, where Keenan had long hair so blond it could almost be white, Monty’s short hair couldn’t have been darker. Keenan possessed the bright gold eyes that marked him as royalty, whereas Monty’s were warm grey.

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I was sent to tell you that the king requests your presence.”

Keenan rolled his eyes, his father always sent Monty when he knew it was news that he may not like. He knew that he could not stay made at him. Keenan flashed him a smile before disappearing into the crowd.

The day before the arrival of this mysterious princess caused chaos. Everyone was on edge as they had all been woken at the sun rise to begin to prepare, the children would be woken at night so they could continue their usual schedule. The king had insisted that the rest of them wake so that they could prepare.

They had to hire additional kitchen staff to provide the food for the Fae visitors. The vampires could or course survive on blood alone. They only ate human food for the taste, it provided no nutrition, but they would require a banquet to rival the gods to feed this many people.

Keenan knocked once. His father had made it abundantly clear that royalty should never have to knock more. He also said that kings should not hurry to greet guests so that they do not appear desperate. Unfortunately for Keenan, this courtesy was also extended to him. His father was known for making visitors wait the time of three breaths before the guards opened the doors.

By the second breath Keenan fixed posture, shoulders back and head held high. On the third breath the guards opened the doors. Walking towards the desk he could feel his father’s eyes burning through him. He bowed before saying, “You sent for me father.”

The king clucked his tongue, “You must not present yourself to the princess like this. You are a mess. Fix your collar, she does not need to be confronted by that on her first day.”

Keenand grit his teeth but did as his father asked. He would hide the mess of scars that marked his neck and torso for as long as practical. A well trained mage would be able to help repair blemishes but his father banished all but a few healers after the last war.

Various activities later, along with a long nap, landed them in the main city. Freyja made a point to sit back and away from the window as she sipped her cold tea daintily with a sour expression. Taeya didn't catch on. The girl had glued herself to the window in awe of her surroundings. During the ride the honey haired blonde had spit balled questions about the new kingdom but slowly the color drained from her sun-kissed skin. "My lady, aren't you the slightest bit nervous?" She whispered. "Will they like you as their new princess? Are they like our bedtime stories?"
.
She turned to look at the princess. Freyja sighed and shook her head, "Our nurse maid was known for telling the most gruesome tales about the Vampire lords. As for if they like me.... I hope they will at least like that the war has ended and see me as a symbol of this peace. We both lost a great number of excellent warriors on those fields. But a population may still be against me. I am a fae, Taeya. My kind killed theirs."
.
"And the killed ours!"
.
The Princess nodded, wine colored curls bobbing at the motion. "It's war, Taeya. That's what happens. Why are you so close to the window? Sit back, honey," She said, patting the cushions beside her. Beyond the carriage she could hear the gates creaking and her brother barking orders to the miniature army with them and then greeting someone. She could hear the shift in his tone and language. He went from old fae to the common tongue in a fluid sentence. She could imagine him now, introducing himself and his troop. Speaking of their journey, apologizing for their ragged appearance that they have arrived in. A few well placed grins and laughs and he would have their stiff fae warriors feeling more comfortable in the foreign place.
.
There was a quick rap at the carriage door before it opened, the sun streaming in. Taeya made an exit before Freyja's red head appeared, her brother offering her his hand to step down. And since she was stiff from the ride over she very much needed it. Her Golden eyes flashed around her surroundings, shaking in the sun. She had read that the Vampires slept during the day and awoke at night. For a nocturnal species, the streets seemed lively. She could see servers making their way through the halls in windows above and it brought a small smile to her face. Be pleasant. Pleasant and Pretty. Those were her mother's last words of advice for her only daughter.
.
Her brother stepped aside, allowing their hosts to see the full view of the princess and her lady. "May I present, Princess Freyja de Atwood-Omelle." She resisted the urge not to elbow her brother for yelling in her ear and instead smiled pleasantly as if she were deaf and her ears not ringing at all. The two ladies curtsied deeply before standing to full height, hands held in from delicately as they waited for the next person to speak.

The king seemed to be satisfied with the adjustment. "They will be here soon, I expect to you to be on your best behaviour. This marriage will go ahead no matter what."
Keenan nodded, wanting out as soon as possible. Being lectured was not how he wanted to spend his time preparing for his new bride.
.
Bowing to the King, Keenan left the room as soon as he could. The throne room was stifling, it represented everything he hated, the cold cruel rule of a king who kills subjects for merely looking at him. It was a legacy that he did not want, but one he was expected to uphold as did his father and grandfather before him. Afterall, vampires had a reputation for a reason.
.
The drawn curtains added to the eerie atmosphere of the castle. It wasn't exactly inviting for a Fae princess. They were of course nocturnal creatures, all legends are based on the truth. The Sun may burn but only exposed skin, gloves and hooded cloaks allowed them to travel during the day. It gave them an advantage in the war. The fae underestimated how truly resourceful they were.
.
Keenan sighed softly as examined the outfit on his bed. A black jacket with dark purple embroidery, which would be paired with a dark circlet. His father liked to make it abundantly clear that he was the prince. It painted a target on his back but his father made it clear that he was the last choice. Damaged from the war and a fight with his own brother, often he wondered if the king was unhappy with which son survived.
.
Once he was dressed to perfect Monty came to accompany him to the arrival of the princess. The dark clothing making him look even paler. "Are you ready to meet this princess?" Monty asked.
"What choice do I have in the matter? My father expects me to prove that he was wrong about me. I have to prove myself to the crown," Keenan said.
"Is she at least pretty? Do you even know what she looks like?"
"I've seen her portrait," Keenan said, indifferent.
.
The sound of hooves on cobblestones filled the air. The Princess was here. Keenan adjusted his collar and held his head high as he stepped out into the courtyard. Luckily for him, night had fallen so there was no risk of burns. A crowd gathered around the carriage, Keenan stood with his father at the front.
.
The Princess that stepped out from the carriage was different than he expected, there was something in the way that she carried herself that made her intriguing. Someone spoke for her, introducing her as Freyja... Her brother maybe? He could smell a blood connection of some sort. Monty was in charge of introductions as he could be rather theatrical at times, "Presenting Crown prince Keenan Medici."
.
Keenan bowed and smiled at the princess, clearly showing his fangs. He could smell the scent of fear on some of their men. Nice to know that the Fae do still tell scary bedtime stories about the creatures that lurk in the night. "Shall we let them get acquainted before dinner?" The king said, nodding at Keenan.
He offered Freyja his arm and led her towards the castle, "I assume you will want to change before dinner?"

Her first thought of the prince was that he was much paler in color than his portrait. If someone had stolen the moon to make into a creature, this creature was standing in front of her. Smiling. Showing canines that were longer than even hers. She didn't have to look to know that Taeya hadn't breathed since he appeared. Her brother nodded to the King and Crown Prince. "Of course," he smiled. "I'd like to add, we will be staying until the festivities are done with and we've given you the gifts from my father. Then we will start our journey back." He told them, laying out their plans to stay before motioning with his hand to Freyja to go to Keenan.
.
The female wished she would have braided her hair back now. They had just got done traveling so she was sure that her ruffled appearance would be excused for the moment. Her once lavender gown now matched the earth at the hems and while she was clean on the surface, her hair was not bound and instead left to its natural curls to wind in every which direction as it pleased. So instead of looking like a modernized royal, she looked like a fae from the tales. Wild and strange. But she stepped towards the prince without a hesitation, taking his arm with a smile she normally reserved for nobles who caught her sneaking through the castle during the wee hours of the morning and turned her eyes to the castle before her. She was soaking in the sun in case it was going to be part of her last moments in the sunshine.
.
"Yes, I would like to change, thank you," She said softly in her musical tone. Taeya caught it and motioned for her brother to grab one of the princess's trunks. One of the four of hers, but there were still five more containing gifts for the King for accepting her as an offering. As they distanced themselves from the others, Freyja's posture became more rigid, her hand hardly a feather on the Prince's arm. She could only assume he felt the same about the situation.
.
"Your highness, as you show me the way, would you mind telling me about your home lands? Forgive my lack of education in the subject of your lands, we were never taught much more than that the Vampire Lords would drink us dry if we didn't attend lessons or properly pour the tea." She smiled again, this one feigning innocence and light. Returning the favor earlier displayed. She may not have fangs as long as he did but hers were still longer than a humans. Taeya, around six feet back to supervise while giving them privacy, would have fainted at the idea. "What sort of music do you have here, prince?" She added, looking around at her surroundings. She made a mental note: extremely tired adults and no children to be seen.
.
Part of her really wanted to know about the new lands. Her curiosity had always been a horror in the courts. She wondered if the Vampire Royalty had heard that much. As far as she knew, their fathers had exchanged a few letters and portraits. To add, the King sent the portrait she hated most. The one where her skin looked dead and her nose was thrice its normal size. She already found her nose to be a nuisance and that painter had brought out nearly any appearance related insecurities she had. The other part of her was already making a map of the grounds and planning an escape to leave this place. But then she would be such a disappointment. And not to mention the threadbare alliance.
.
It could all crumble.

The princess stiffened by his side as they walked away from the crowd. What had she been told about him? The way one acted in a war was significantly different to how one acted in court. Perhaps the princess was sheltered and that was the course of such anxiety, or did she despise this arranged marriage as much as he did? She didn’t match the mental image he had built, she seemed wild, free and spirited. Perhaps in time they could grow to love each other. He wasn’t convinced, perhaps all he could hope for was companionship.

“No one here will bite you, that is one thing I can promise. We haven’t had a fledgeling in this castle for a long time. The rest of us are able to satiate on our stores of blood, there is no danger to your people or yourself,” he said gently.

The castle was large and of course his father gave Freyja the quarters nearest to his, unfortunately that also meant they were farthest from the entrance. “I am sorry for the long walk, there are passages that make the walk more direct but you have to understand that we do not show them to guests on their first night.”

He took note of the princess’ appearance as they walk. She was more unkempt than he thought she would be. Her wild curls framing her face and the stains on the bottom of her dress. There was a reason vampires tended to wear black, when your diet consisted solely of blood you wanted to avoid stains.

He nodded when she asked about the lands. It was only natural that she would be curious especially as they did not allow much information to escape. “You will learn more about my kind as time goes on, you do have to understand that not all will be as kind as I.”

He wasn’t sure how much she wanted to know, lecturing her seemed pointless and she would soon learn the intricacies of court as time went on. “Eventually you will see a map somewhere and it will all make sense, but my family has linage that goes back for millennia. After the last civil war we own a majority of the lands, the rest is divided between various lords, ladies and my extended family. We do have human residents who do donate blood and are heavily compensated. The war with your people caused a divide, most magic users have been banished from the kingdom. Tell me, is it true that your people all perform some kind of magic?”

He stopped outside the doors to her chambers, “I am just next door if you need anything. Shall I collect you in an hour for the banquet? I was thinking we could go for a walk in the gardens after? It will allow us some privacy, away from prying eyes and ears,” he said with a getle laugh, "I will be next door if you need anything before then."

Keenan breathed a huge sigh of relief when he was finally alone. Playing diplomat was exhausting. The bed was awfully tempting but his father would kill him if arrived at the banquet with a crinkled jacket. Instead he settled for the chair in front of the mirror. It was rumored that vampires had no reflection but that was only for the traditional silver backed mirrors that many humans kept. Those in the castle were imported from across the continent. Expensive but worth it, afterall, it was hard being that vain if he could never admire his own reflection.

Carefully placing the circlet on the dresser, Keenan brushed his hair. He pulled his hair into a half up, half down style so that it was out of his face. He carefully placed the dark circlet atop his head, a beautiful contrast to his perfectly blond hair. He always attempted to be the perfect son, the perfect prince and it was true that he was adored by the people, in particular the females and the odd male, Keenan of course loved the attention regardless of who it was from. In his opinion he was the pinacle of beauty, at least that was before the war.

It was no surprise to him that his brother was a traitor. His father believed that his corruption convinced him to join the mages. That's what this whole marriage was about. His father had no interest in peace, he wanted their lands but he also wanted to force Keenan to settle down. Keenan had suggested a marriage proposal to the fae crown prince, that earned him a stern talking to but you don't know if you don't ask. No his father wanted to find him a nice princess to settle down with. The thing is, Freyja didn't seem like the sort that wanted to settle down.

She seemed so free... so well and truly alive, which may pose a slight challenge as he promised her complete safety while she was there. The vampires were used to restraining themselves around humans, they were not used to having someone who was well and truly alive living amongst them permanently, hell Keenan wasn't sure how even he would cope. How would the princess cope with their traditions? Most involved blood and hunting. They may be more civilised than the monsters from the scary stories but there was an element of truth to them. Freyja seemed so pure compared to the demons that lurked in this court. Would the darkness an monsters corrupt her?

The Princess now stood in the center of the room. Taeya and her brother, Ronwyn, entered behind her and the large male place the trunk down as gently as he could. The three looked around and she heard someone from behind her give a hefty sigh. "Awful dark in here," Ronwyn whispered. Taeya was the one to sigh this time as she shut the door and walked over to the window and opened the curtains, allowing a stream of light within the room.
.
"Now, now. I must get Freyja ready. So get out, Ronwyn," the small blonde said pointing at the door. A clear signal for him to leave. Freyja turned and grinned at the sight. Ronwyn was large, even for a fae male, tall and full built. Taeya was a Dwarf compared to her brother and yet he surrendered, hands up as he made his exit, hardly have any time to bow before Taeya ran over and shut the door with a slam.
.
"No need to be so harsh, Taeya," the princess said, kneeling at the trunk full. Popping the lock and opening it she looked at the piles of fabric and smaller boxes that held her jewelry and slippers.
.
"He's my brother, it's my job. I'll fetch you some bath water," The fae said, disappearing again. Freyja smiled and shook her head.
.
The female chose a deep red dress a few shades darker than her hair. With golden accents and pearls beading the bodice, sleeves, and the hem. The dress was her favorite she commissioned before she came. The sleeves were dreadfully long but they were slit at the shoulder puffs to reveal the black fabric the layered under her dress. "You should wear the grey one. The one with silver. If you wear the red one tonight you'll look like you're trying too hard to get on their good side. Remember, you are a gift yourself, Highness."
.
Freyja glared at Taeya, "How about the green one?" She asked, pulling out a heavy piece of velvet with snippets of cream and gold. Her friend rolled her eyes but nodded, giving her approval. Freyja smiled and grabbed the green pair of shoes that went along with it. She'd leave the jewelry and hair to Taeya. She was better at that anyways.
.
The room was colored darkly. Eventually she could blend in nicely. She walked over to the window to watch as her brother led his group away from the main entrance. The princess sighed and walked away from the window and back to the trunk. Taking out her jewelry box, she placed it on her new vanity and opened the lid. She took the few pieces of paper and the thick leather-bound book out and swiftly walked over to her bed and hid them in between the mattresses. She'd find a better place later on.
.
"Your bath, milady," Taeya smiled, motioning with her hand to the tub. Freyja smiled at her, smoothing the blankets as if that's what she had been doing the whole time. She walked over and Taeya helped her out of the lace and stays in the back of her gown, letting it sink to the floor before she sank in the tub and got to scrubbing herself. Se could hear Taeya going through her jewelry and deciding which would pair best with the gown. "The pearls, highness, or the emeralds? Nevermind, I've found something!" Taeya called before going silent once more.
.
Freyja grinned, hurrying to wash her hair and get out before the water got too cold. When the princess finished scrubbing her skin raw, she stepped out and reached for the towels, wrapping her hair then body. She dried as fast as she could before entering into the open. Taeya silently helped Freyja into the dress and shoes, not commenting on how the princess said nothing as she sat down and got her hair done. Nothing as Taeya twisted and pulled her hair into and updo that left some of her curls down and around her face. Nothing as Golden teardrops were put on her ears and a simple golden chain with the smallest emerald was placed around her neck. She didn't say anything until Taeya went to look for the cosmetics.
.
"None of that. We won't have time. I was told an hour before they'd be ready. Also, I want to look as natural as possible." The princess said, looking at her reflection. The Lady in Waiting nodded silently, stepping back to admire her work done. All Freyja could offer her was a tight lipped smile. The prince told her not all the vampires would be nice to her, and she expected that, but now that everything was happening she wished more than anything she was just home.
