Yea so just as the title says, someone tried to break into my hotel room and my friends who is about 10 doors down while we were sleeping. I'm at a conference in Oregon for higher education and our advisors were forced by the college to put all 15 students and the 3 advisors in hotel rooms that were the cheapest they could find in the city. It's less than a 5 minute walk to the conference center but the streets are crowded with the homeless who are almost always on something (we can smell it). My room's walls are coated in dirt and grime, the house keepers never cleaned it and there is black mold dripping from the shower. My room happens to have a spider infestation and everything I move has spiders in it. There was hair on the floor (piles of it) that definitely isn't mine and when housekeeping came, even though they were explicitly told not to go to our rooms unless we asked, they came in and swept the hair onto my carpet which is oddly sticky and resolved some towels I had set on the floor of theirs because the shower leaked a puddle of water that trailed out the bathroom door when I went to shower the first and second night. My friends and I are scared to be here. The first night, someone tried to break into mine and my friend's room at 1 am which was terrifying. My door lock doesn't work so I am relying on one of those metal flip over locks. When we all told management that between the broken locks and brown stains on all of the beds that we were not okay sleeping here, they refused to do anything to fix it. So we can't cancel or rebook because of the college who won't allow it (they are in northern Washington and won't be able to get us money in time). So last night after I saw spiders creating webs on my bathtub, I started looking at the Hyatt down the road. My friend said he was scared and uncomfortable so I ended up actually sleeping with him last night. And now this morning I am trying to book a different hotel. I feel horrible because I should be grateful when some people have no roof over their heads at all. But I just don't feel safe or comfortable staying here. |

It was terrifying. It still is! I'm just crossing my fingers that they have at least one room avaliable in the hotel down the road. I will pay extra for it. My grandparents are concerned about me and offered to pay half of whatever the cost is. One of the members of my class group said they heard screaming and went to check it out and someone got ran over by a car in front of our hotel. There was a shoot out a street down yesterday as well. And today my friend I shared and room with last night and I were walking from the convention center and there was a lady wearing just her underwear and a tanktop covered in what looked like shaving cream screaming at people as they walked down the road right in front of the hotel lobby. It's been an adventure. I'm just ready to go home. I'm terrified. I can't ethically leave my friends who are struggling as much as I am. So if I can get a hotel room, I am letting them come sleep in my room. This whole place just wreaks of cat urine and cigarette smoke. Inside and out. |

Ok so little update. We are expected to debrief with advisors every morning. This morning all 15 students talked more about the hotel than the information we learned at the conference. Our advisors were horrified by our rooms and they were staying in the same conditions. They could tell students - regardless of gender or sexual orientation - were very uncomfortable. Instead of enjoying the conference, they went to every hotel in the area and found a hotel that was able to house us all. It is much much better. They called the college who is now on the phone arguing with the hotel we are staying with and trying to get money back for false advertisement and the quality of the rooms. We have been informed to document everything and are preparing to move everyone. |

Thats Good! Glad you and the others got moved! The "Hotel" you were staying at sounds horrid and seems like it was in the worst part of Oregon. Glad everyones safe and been moved to a better hotel! <3 |

We are all super happy here. We all have roommates now but no one cares. We are just happy to be safe and able to take a shower without worrying about the room being broken into. I have photos that I will upload and post when I can. They don't show it as well in the pictures as it does in person but it is close enough. |

Point out to your school that lawsuits can and should be filed for safety reasons and false advertisment of their rooms (basically fraud) if the first hotel doesn't refund your money. Document everything so you have your proof. |

The college has contacted the agency that recommended we go through them and then (I will go ahead and just reveal the name of the place) the Quality Inn who have given us a 90% refund for the time we were there. They had us video and take photos of everything. I took a long video explaining everything (which I can't post or share here because I don't know how) but I am getting my photos onto DA so I can share them. I took less photos because the video was better and I could show that the carpet was actually sticky for some odd reason and explain the smells etc and show how the door did not lock. What is kind of funny is that despite being in a better hotel (we were happy to share rooms and had roommates) but my friends and I all piled into my room since my roommate and I we were on the 8th floor of the new hotel and they were only on the 3rd and 4th floors which was where our advisors were located. So most of the time when we had time off, and everyone (even the advisors) took a day off because of the lack of sleep and need for a mental/physical break and the shock, 5 of the 15 of us spent time in one room. And it worked out great and we had a great time. Sadly when I got home, I had only had 11 hours of sleep in 5 days which is obviously way less than what a person should be needing. I slept for about 12 hours last night which is super abnormal for me but in the middle of the night, i woke up terrified because I had no clue where I was. I literally couldn't register that I was in my own home. When I noticed my bedroom door was open, it only sent me into another wave of panic because I thought I was back in the first hotel and that someone had entered my room. It was only until after I got up to close my door that I realized where I was. Anyways, photos are going to be in another message below. The images really don't show how nasty it was because my camera wasnt able to pick it up that well. |
