No, it's expensive because of the time spent training the dogs and not all dogs make the cut, for whatever reason.

It would actually lower the price since it would become wildly used. Supply and demand.

I guess thatÂ’s why the US has so many issues with it. How can someone need a specially trained animal and there is no paperwork saying itÂ’s professionally trained?? Seems pretty sketchy IMO.

Again a difference between emotional support vs physical disability support

A service dog is just a dog that's trained to perform tasks. It doesn't need to be professionally done. There's already a high barrier for people to get a service animal. Requiring them to all be professionally trained just further raises the barrier and gate keeps to those who can afford to drop 10-25k

Al I do agree with that. my friends with service dogs do too

@PK, my biggest fear though is having the dog fail out.

Capp, that is against Disability rights act

Well, a service dog is defined as a dog trained to do a task to mitigate disability. So if they are trained to do a task they can automatically be considered a service dog regardless of who trained them.

I would feel more comfortable calling an animal professional if it had gone through a test to prove it knew the basics

Hummer read what I just wrote! It's so doable!

But I suppose I donÂ’t understand how people can call a non-professionally trained dog a professional service dog?

I get an emotional support animal but a “service dog” should be a professionally trained animal.

Capp I know a few good friends of mine are better than most professional trainers (no certification for this either from government) Both of them worked in rescue with me. I turned into somewhat of a cat trainer. Mine are trained, not to tricks but to simple commands. Same with my friends, they use the on hand training (& LOVE) when they worked in rescue. their service dogs are as good as any dog from a school

PawPaw, usually not. But some clubs has it as requirement since they give out straws

Oop sorry I didn't know it was wrong chat

For example, I would feel totally comfortable training my own service dog because I have prior experience in dog training. I would much rather do that than pay $10k to send it to a trainer.
