They take some maintenance like any pet, but a larger tank with a betta and a few plants has always been pretty low difficulty in my experience as far as pets go.
Revel, the worst part is keeping water parameters in check. Feeding the fish itself, is very simple. Everything sounds basic. But the water parameters getting off can be troubling, sometimes
I recommend doing a heavily planted tank first, letting it mature a month or so, and then adding a betta! The plants help the water quality a TON. And real plants are so much better than fake ones for bettas!
@Puck For my tenth birthday I was given hermit crabs from those side shops at the beach and I almost returned them when I was googling their care and realized everything told by the workers was going to kill the crabs in less then a month. Still got the same crabs eight years later in a 75 gallon tank
I miss having a betta. I don't have a ton of extra time right now though so my bird keeps me busy enough. I have a tank in the closet though and hopefully some day I can have one again.

Choose a Background for your horse.
Withdraw your horse from it's team. You will lose all team points for this horse. Please discuss this action with the team manager first.
Your horse may show 3 times per week. Shows run daily. Your horse and rider will gain valuable experience from showing. Select a discipline to show in, or scratch from tonight's show.
Showing in the special weekly shows doesn't count against your horse's weekly regular show count.
