I'm not good with judging quality of offspring, but that's a thing you can do. How is his training?

This is the XLB mare I have on my side. At her best, she was #19 XLB. She's now #40 because I haven't tried when breeding in a while

Agreed, weakness creates weakness and its very difficult to breed it out of lines

I've found that weak parents lead to weak foals regardless of rating. Case in point, my X side account which has many WWWs (and actually some XLB mares) because I got a daughter of the #1 X stud during his freshie year when his fee was cheaper. Compared to this account where I just got my first WWW in something like 30 game years and it's because I used the #1 AA stud. I need to get a brood and a TB straw on the high LB to get better foals into my TB lines

What a beauty! I'm curious, what discipline do you plan to train him in, if any?

Hi all! I'm back with an update! I know, how exciting :)

So Eli is settling in great. He was definitely a barn baby at some point in his life, because he loves being in a stall and has no problem with someone cleaning his stall while he's in there. Lucky him, because he gets to stay in at night until he gains more weight. During the day he gets to go out with the other boys, and they all get along great.

I've recently started doing groundwork and whatnot with him, since I'm starting from the ground up. He absolutely loves to do liberty work. I will just throw the lead rope over his back, or tuck it loosely into a pocket. He will walk, trot, stop, back, and come down from any gait all on verbal cue.

He also will move his front and hind end away from pressure from a light touch and "over". He's picked that all up in a matter of a few training sessions.

He also loves to show off and trot around on a lead rope (video below). He thinks being pretty is good fun. He's also learned to give into pressure/flex with a smooth snaffle from the ground. I am not sure what discipline he will be yet - we'll find out when I start training in the saddle.

I've been doing lunging as well, and he's very attentive and listens to voice commands so well. In the video, theres a clip of him being lunged. He does have quick release reins from the bit to the surcingle, but as you can see, it is very, very light contact and he has free motion. It's essentially for when he decides to throw his head or stretch his nose way out, he can learn how to give into that pressure.

His tail is braided, as I'm wrapping it up for the winter. In my experience, they grow much faster when they're up. My one horse has had his tail wrapped year round for over two years and it has grown ridiculous amounts. They'll get washed and rewrapped routinely, and I do have a regimen for keeping tails up and growing them - feel free to ask about it.

Funny enough, we had a photographer planned to come out for professional photos before this, and I decided to pull him out for a few. Man does he love the camera! Credits are in the caption of the video!

If yall have any questions about him, or what I'm doing with him, feel free to ask!

He worked amazing today, and I also took him on his first trail "walk" down our back trail. He was cool as a cucumber!

On a fun note - I've now sat on him twice! I won't be doing any work under saddle for a little while yet, because he really needs to gain muscle and weight through his top line. But, I have sat on him twice bareback, and he couldn't care less. He was relaxed, looking around, and wasn't bothered whatsoever. I don't think he's broke - as our friend said she did sit on him when he was in the pen, and although he didn't do anything, he also didn't seem to know much. That's great for me, because I get to do all his training my way!!

Something to make yall "aww". I got off work tonight and walked into the barn. I flicked on the stall lights and walked over to his stall. I had accidentally woken him up! He was laying down and blinked at me very tiredly. I asked him if I could come in with him, and I walked into his stall. I crouched down to his level and he stayed laying down, and let me hug his head and give him goodnight kisses. I love knowing that he already trusts me that much in such a short amount of time. <3
