 I dont know if I have enough experience yet to give advice, but I find it easier to make the real base color with the shades and then add on the markings. I wouldnt recommend making a white base first, then you end up with too many layers and can end up losing original details as text and fur 😊 
 
 I use acrylic paint, but I find them a bit too thick to work with when Im playing with harder markings (as appaloosa and sabino patterns) because it doesnt fade that good. I have heard of someone using pastels, and the results with that looks really good and I think I want to try that when I have the moneys 🎨
