His tail is a little ratty I didn't brush it today

Thanks so much! Your horse's tail is beautiful! My girl has a pretty good tail but it is just so much to maintain. I need a really good conditioner that I can work into daily to help keep it from breaking.

My horse has ground-length, almost five-foot long hair - so I'm a bit of a self-proclaimed mane guru.
For a coat conditioner - feed a balanced diet, maybe add a nice oil or flax, curry till your arms fall off, and watch the shine from within. If your horse's coat is dull, and not due to just being super dirty, I wouldn't add any extra conditioners or shine products unless you're showing and need that extra brilliance. You also don't want to add anything that is going to add slip to the coat and potentially endanger you or other riders.

For manes and tails, I like to keep it as simple and natural as possible. I like to avoid the cheap, low-quality silicone products except for maybe maybe maybe once or twice a year. Silicones work really well, but they end up doing some long-term damage/long term negative effects if they're not water soluable/high-quality. I find that they end up drying the hair out long term. I only use like a cowboy magic or show sheen like once a year when I do a BIG detangle, and that's really only because I'm working with so much hair and I only have so much time to devote to it. A few years ago, when my horse's hair was shorter, I never used the silicone crap and he had such amazing hair quality because of it.

Oil based is great for hair health, but gotta be really careful on the skin so it doesn't cause burns in the sun.
For manes and tails, I'm a huge fan of deep conditioners and masks, I just try to avoid crest and skin in case anything causes irritation.

I forgot about this but thanks for all the recommendations!

Since I made this post my horse rubbed a chunk of mane out on a feeder. So now she has a big spot on her mane that is rubbed down to the skin. So I am seriously trying to grow it out for the show season

I'd still recommend Healthy Hair Care. The man who started and owns the company shows cutting horses and has been a long time customer at the barn I work for. Not only is he a great guy but he knows his products and puts so so so much care into how they are made and the ingredients used. Not trying to be biased, I mean, even we have tried other products throughout the years but Healthy Hair Care remains superior in our book. Plus, the moisturizer is extremely helpful when trying to grow manes out again!

Mine did the same -_- I've been trying to grow it out for a while now, but it's still super short. She wears a faceless sleezy often and I add oils to it, but it doesn't grow much. She was originally bald in that spot, so it did grow a bit.

Ooh, I did not know that about the owner!
~
I love the product and you used to be able to buy it from the local feed store but since I moved I can't find it anywhere. I went to order it and to have it come from the States on off the website i would be over $40, which is just a little pricey for me. But maybe I can get someone to bring me some when they come to visit from my hometown.

Totally get that! Have you looked at other retailers? Like Chewy maybe?
Feel free to pm me too if you have any questions about products etc. I've used them all for years!
