I bought my first horse from a friend of my Mom. The lady was selling her property and needed to get rid of the two horses she had. The one I ended up buying was some sort of cross..my best guess was a Belgian/pony cross. He had HUGE hooves (think dinner plates), but was only 15.2 :P He had a really thick hide as well, my equine masseuse insisted he had to have draft in him. *shrugs* He was a super firey orange chestnut, with the ugliest/saddest mane and tail you ever did see.

He was a jerk, but he was my jerk. When I bought him, his name was Blaze...ya..that wasn't staying. Ended up changing it to Chase. He thought he was a ladies man, and we suspected him to be cut proud..which was also the vet's conclusion. He was around 18, had scars from being a public-pay- to-ride trail riding horse (across the nose from a rubbing halter under a bridle, behind his ears from the same thing and terrible white scar patches from a rubbing girth) I always forgave his bad temper because I know his past life had to have been unfavourable. I found it alarming that they would use a horse that was cut proud and had a bad attitude for trail rides..especially since many of those people wouldn't have a clue about horses or riding...but I guess it doesn't surprise me.
Ended up selling him after we had a terrible accident. I ended up sitting a rear, which would have been fine, but somehow he lost his balance and fell back on top of me. Many bruises and a few broken ribs later I tried to ride him again, but even with help I felt myself too jumpy. This would not do on him, and I just couldn't justify keeping him just to stare at. It was a tough decision to let him go, and I always wonder what happened to him, though he's likely long dead now.

My first horse was actually a pony (POA/Shetland) she was a lead line pony when I got her as a birthday present. I was 9 and was getting over a bad horse injury and I was stubborn. She was 10 pushy, stubborn, and a perfect match for me.
I would not let my mom help me ride her as she was all mine😉. Within the first month I probably got bucked off near 100 times, but after the first month of learning together we did everything together.
I now own her 12y old colt who is just as ornery but can be the most laid back pony on his good days.
Last I heard Sarah was being used as a pee-wee barrel pony for a girl who had also had a bad accident with horses. Sarah is now 28y old.

My mom had a friend who bred Tennessee Walkers and rescued animals. At some point the friend recued a foal whose mother died and the breeders didn't have time to bottle feed him; she didn't know what breed he was. My mom thought he was a quarter horse, but when we moved out west and saw real quarter horses she changed her mind. When the horse was 2 (and I was 9) the friend gave him to me and let us board him at her place. She hadn't named him, so I got to name him Buddy. I had him for 3 years. When we moved away we gave him back to the friend. Last we heard she still has him. I would ride him through the pasture, fields, and woods the friend owned. No shows or official lessons.

My first horse (who I still own) is an unraced TB. I fell in love with him just by looking at a picture of him. He is a dark bay with one little sock on his left hind leg. I bought him when he was 4 and he came from a very bad place. When we first met each other he and I knew absolutely nothing. It was kinda like "Oh you don't know anything? Me either! Lets go show the world what we can do!" and that's what we did. Everyone thought my parents and I were crazy for buying a TB for a 12 yr old because of their 'hot' reputation but we proved those people wrong. He definitely is my heart horse with out a doubt!

We bought a freaking pony. A Shetland pony named Patches. She bucked me off and kept chasing me around the field when I would go feed her. I was scared of horses for a long time after that. Then we got Lady an Arab mare who was a sweetie but couldn't go faster then a trot or she couldn't breathe. Then I leased an appy named Chip who was very lazy and then I got Mr. Chief and then finally Hannibal! Chief I have had for six years now and Hannibal for three and I love my brats dearly.

My family has had horses since before I was born so I technically had many first horses lol! But the one I called my first horse was a 14.3 AQHA sorrel gelding named Zipper aka Mr. Flashy Winner. He was that once in a lifetime horse that most people only dream of having. He was perfect in every way. He taught me so much. We showed walk trot together. Sadly I lost him due to cancer when I was 13. It was heartbreaking and still is. I’m 22 now and have had a couple horses since him. I finally have another AQHA gelding that holds a special place in my heart. He looks almost identical to Zipper but only in looks. His name is Archie and we ride western pleasure. As special as he is, he is unpredictable. He’s very smart and well trained but ran a bit hot when I first got him. As he’s gotten older and so have I, we worked things out to where I can ride him in our arena and have an amazing time.

In the future I plan to buy another horse or two to be able to trail ride.

my first horse( he was my moms) was an Appendix QH Gelding, bay with 4 white hairs on his forehead. he did everything but was quite a hand ful as we had a few other horses. One was Diego a buckskin paint gelding that no one could ride cause he was lame. Cody was the first horse I had ever ridden, I don't remember much from when we had him but we had to sell Cody and Diego. Diego went to a good home as a company horse and Cody now does Dressage and we are only 2 1/2 hours away from him!! now im trying to convince my mom to maybe allow me to lease

My first horse, and the horse I learned to ride on, was a supposedly Arab x QH small cream palomino mare (we found out later that she was a full blooded QH but papers hadn’t been transferred from her previous owner.) Her name was I’m a Honeydew Too, or Honey. She was left out in a pasture most of her life and her hooves were neglected, so she came to us with mud rot and overgrown hooves. She had also had 4 or more foals throughout her lifetime, and was around 20 when she came to us. My fondest memories of her involve her being the most stubborn old grump, and never wanted to trot. Another memory is every spring she would shed terriblely, whereas the other horses in the barn were clipped. I would come home covered in long cream hairs, nearly enough to make a blanket. It was unusual I started riding a non-Saddlebred horse, since that is what I’ve worked with all the rest of my life and directly after Honey, but she was still a stubborn mare we all loved very much. She lived to be 36.

My first horse was a shetland gelding, only 2 years old when we bought him. I was supposed to train him for ponies harness racing. We had an unique, weird bond. One day we were able to work together with zero problems and the next day we hated each other to the moon. It was like having a human friend, except that Lasse couldn't talk.
He was dark bay with no markings and it is still my favorite coat color. I wish I could have kept him, but mom decided to start saving money from selling Lasse away. Luckily I'm going to see him soon, after 4 years!

My first horse was a half Clydesdale half Quarter (the Quarter stud coulda been a mutt who knows but her mom was FULL Clydesdale) her name was Sweetie Pie, I was 7 when I got her. My aunt's mare foaled her and I think I got her around a year or so for my birthday. I remember her butt was taller than my mom and though she wasn't broke I could sit on top of her and be lead around. I was young, she was a pretty flaxen girl, a little spunky though. She kicked apart my dad's homemade outhouse that he left in our pasture (we used it for our famous 4th of July parties lol) and we saw her chase a hog (wild) out of the pasture one day as well. I had an accident with another one of my aunt's horses, took a bite/chunk out of my shoulder, never was the same around horses again. It didn't help that Sweetie Pie would chase you if you turned away or during a storm so we gave her to my grandpa who loved her for many years before she went to live where she does now. That is with her half sister at an Amish farm pulling carts which I think is pretty cool! They are 13-15 years old and work great there together, happy ending!
