Getting my own horse (At some point) June 9, 2018 02:37 PM

So I have a job...at a fast food place because I am 16 and there isn't really anywhere to work except fast food places when you are my age. I get paid $9 an hour and my first paycheck was $138.19 (I recently started working again after my knee injury).

Basically, I want to save up tons of money to get a horse for myself. But I need some help...or ideas/suggestions on some things I should get before I get the horse. I don't have many things so I need to get a lot of things.

What I have:
~ Halter
~ Lounge Line
~ Lead Rope
~ Helmet (even though I rarely use it)
~ Spurs (only used 1 time)

Things I need:
~ Western Saddle
~ Saddle Pad
~ Bridle/Bit
~ Boots (for the horse)
~ Fly Sheet
~ Fly mask
~ First aid kit
~ My own Truck (No fords)
~ My own trailer

I would love some help in knowing what I need to get first. Please no mean comments

If you have any other suggestions on what I should get, please feel free to let me know!! Also, what type of horse should I get? What age?

I have been working with horses since I was 11...They are my life and are what keeps me sane.

The Truck and Trailer will be your biggest expenses and you really, really need to consider if you need your own trailer. How often you plan on trailering this horse? I mean trips/year. You also need to consider insurance for truck, trailer, and horse including liability.
You also need to plan for board. Depending on where you are $500/month might be cheap, expensive or average.
You need to plan for when things go wrong. You need to have at least 6 months board + basic care (feed/hay + farrier + vets calls) squirreled away before you start shopping. And then you need to not touch it or add at least 20% /month to it after you get the horse.
I'm going to be mean, enjoy being a teenager - owning a horse while working min. wage is like taking home a baby from the hospital that needs its own apartment.

I don't plan on trailering much. I would like to go to some barrel races and such.

Boarding wise, it costs $90 a month ($3 a day per stall used). I don't plan on getting a horse for a while as it is. As time goes on I do plan on getting another job too.

Also, don't buy some of the tack until after you buy the horse - you'll want to make sure what you have fits! Especially the saddle. Learn a lot about saddle fitting. There's tons of helpful things online about it.

I plan on waiting on that also. I know someone who knows a ton about saddle fitting so I will be sure to get him down here and have him help me out with that.

Wow that is very affordable. Maybe you could arrange to rideshare to barrel races and such with other members of your barn for like $50?

I have some friends that barrel race that I can ask to give me rides and pay them until I get my own truck and trailer.
