Bird, that's because his bars equal his training level. I would call this the bare minimum for entering. I'd expect this one to come in 6th to 8th. When they have more bars than training level, they do well

Or this horse has 8 bars in two traits, but not one so is he ready?

I think what's confusing me is horses like this have 8 bars, but will still do poorly in a show.

I prefer AD, but that's because I breed AD and my showing stock are failed outcomes of breeding.

The Barn Manager is the only reason I show. I am terrible at tracking and entering by hand.

Do you guys prefer showing AD, SD, or a mix of both?

I used to enter all my horses by hand, but it took waayyyy too long. I found myself not entering horses at all because I didn't want to fool with it. Now I'm using the BM and I wish I had done it sooner. She may not make quite as much money as I would, but it's a lot faster and more convenient.

I've always used the barn manager - set to only competitive - and always turned a nice profit. Like last week, pulled in 252k

It's more of a time-saver than anything. She'll help you earn money over time, but probably not as much as if you entered the horses yourself.

I'm not sure what criteria the BM uses to enter them, but most just leave her set to show the same horses all the time. She's supposed to pick the ones that are expected to do well, but I've heard mixed reviews of her effectiveness.

I see. So say I manage all my horses instead of only picking the ones with double the training bars than their showing level, if I toggle that, she'll only show horses that SHOULD come out profiting and not show the ones that won't? Or would it just be better to go through my horses each Monday after training and have her manage only the horses that meet that double bar standard? Sorry for the questions, I'm trying to finally turn a profit lmaooo

The only time to use "Show All" is if you have futurity foals or horses in an eventing federation where they must show all three shows each week.

Riding Tips for Beginner Western April 16, 2018 10:18 PM

Former Stable

Hello! So I've been taking lessons for around a year and can still hardly trot without dying so uh, I have arrived to ask for some tips. My biggest issue is I am never assertive with the horse in riding, so they do whatever they want. I also am always nervous and tense in the saddle which usually leads to me bouncing in the saddle while trotting, which the horse obviously doesn't like a 94 pound object bouncing around on a already heavy object on their back while they try to do their job.

So any tips on how to not be so nervous in the saddle, and on loosening up a bit, and being more assertive? I mean I'll take any tips, because I'm still somewhat a beginner so I mean
Help is greatly appreciated.

I'd tell your trainer what's going on first, maybe they can give you th "old reliable" of the stable.

I'd also suggest you breathe and loosen up a bit :) maybe rub some lavender oil (essential oils) on you before you go out and see if thet helps anything :) I've been riding basically my entire life (mainly western but I did do English for a while) so feel free to PM me for (some) advice:)
Ps I used to be nervous too when I was first starting out again after a 2 year break ;)

I learned to trot western with a post so if you're not doing that already it might be good to try it. It's a good way to get yourself feeling a bit more comfortable without having to deal with the flopping around.

You should definitely discuss your issues with your trainer. :) They are right there watching you and can give more exciting advice than people that have never seen you ride. ;) If, however, after over a year they havent been able to teach you how to sit a trot, you might want to consider finding a better instructor.

That said, when you're sitting a trot, you have to learn to take the bounce in your ankles. A lot of western riders are actually standing ever-so-slightly in their stirrups until they learn how to really sit it. I know this can be difficult to do when you are tense though. Are you tense because the horse has behavioral issues that are difficult for you to deal with? If so, it's important to have a trainer work with you and your horse so you learn how to handle it. If you're just nervous riding, the best thing for that lots and lots of practice. The more time you spend in the saddle, the more natural and comfortable it will feel. <3

I ride English competitively now, but I used to ride western. I would just recommend that you relax, nothing is gonna happen. The horse you are riding on for lessons is most likely not gonna do anything naughty, he is a lesson horse. Your trainer wouldn’t feel comfortable putting you on a horse that is a bit naughty. The horse I stared out on when I was four was super easy and sweet. When you become a better rider, you will want a naughty horse to train you, but for now you have a nice horse :) my horse bucks, rears, bolts, spooks, and everything that exists, but I am still comfortable on her. As long as you start out fine, everything else in the future will be easier.
