Farming EBS - SD strategy? August 7, 2026 02:13 PM

I'm a new player, so my focus right now is mostly just picking up show prospects and farming EBS. Luckily, I joined just at the end of 204, so I was able to pick up a bunch of "the bars didn't go up, the new year is coming, take it away" types for next to nothing.

I've been reading through old threads for insight and have a strat question:

It sounds like training is what levels a horse up in grades, not performance. Any horse can achieve L9, but doesn't necessarily have the stats to be competitive at L9. The horse is not worth the entry fees or rider fees, so it's retirement time.

I also assumed that all horses have a preferred discpline they naturally perform better in regardless of ratings/stats, but maybe I'm wrong.

This horse (plus some of the older threads on training/showing) got me thinking:

https://horseeden.com/horse.php?id=44713761

He's P/W/W, and did well in all 3 events at L1.

I've been training him in AD, but I was wondering if switching him to SD, showing him in that until he caps out, then switching him to training in another discpline will extend his useful life?

Like can he be L8 in SJ, done as a jumper, but be, say, L3 XC and I switch him to that to continue his career and keep earning his keep for a little longer?

Example of a horse who looks like she's been SD most of her life:

Hi,
I am very impressed by your start.
But remember that the winnings must pay for your riders fees each week. So your single level 6 horse will probably never make a profit. Go to that rider and unassign the horse, then sack them... It feels horrid, but profit is everything.
Each rider needs at least 5 horses to make a profit.
The horse can stay of course, unmounted, especially if breeding well.
Be patient and as your horses increase in level take on only those riders required.
It is true that the winnings go up as the levels go up. But the costs of riders does so as well.
AD or SD depends on your own preference. From what I observe SD may pay out better. But requires more attention.
BUT the riders should stay 'all disciplines'. That way they go up slower and get more show experience which pays off in wins and profits.
An all disciplines rider is more flexible, D/CX/J horses can all be ridden and shown and trained by them. Thus they have more horses per rider = more profit per rider.
Hey I have probably bored you to tears .. Lol
Have fun and welcome to hee :)

P.s. Yes that horse is totally SD. Ready to be sent to the pixels in the sky. No good for any other disciline now.

Back when I still consistently showed and had time to, I always preferred SD. And what I'd do, is keep all of them on the exact same week of training. All geldings. So, in theory, when one is ready, they all should be ready. After a while you can weed out who's not-so-great.
.
I personally never put new geldings in that barn as to keep the training weeks aligned. Just made new barns with new geldings, lol.
.
There are lots of showing guides out there to teach you how to read the training gauge to know when they should best be entered in shows. :)

Ah, thanks for doing the math on the riders! It occured to me there was probably a break even point, but I hadn't sat down to do the math.

Can you explain why that SD horse is useless now? Is it just because it's SP in XC/J? Because I agree I wouldn't bother training up anything less than Premium, but if it was WC/P/P, could it have another life at say, Jumping?

What Ive realized over the years is that if a horse is trained SD, say the rating is EEE, for convience, and was trained XC all its life, when it hits lv 10 in XC it should be around lv6-7 in J. They can "make money" if you swap the training to J but they wont be super competitive and will always have faults. I have so many geldings now that I FR any that hit lv 10 in SD. BUT to build up your barns its not necessiarly detrimental to swap disciplines when they level just bear in mind one trait will be significantly lower and they wont have clear rounds...

OP you might want to change your terminology. "Farming EBS" is generally associated with cheating. What you're talking about isnt' farming. It's just making ebs from showing. Also, welcome to the game! We hope you enjoy your stay.

Yikes! LOL. Bet that made you go "hmm, what's this thread here?"

Is there a better phrase that people use? I'm just coming from MMORPGs. :)
